| Cancun's
Hotel Zone is really just one long beach
separated from the mainland by a system of
lagoons. The hotel zone is shaped
like the number seven, as you can see from
the small map to the left. (Click to
enlarge.) Downtown Cancun is at the
top/left of the map and the
airport is at the
bottom/left of the map. |
| At the top of the "7"
(beaches running east and
west) is the Bahia
de Mujeres - the northern end of the hotel
zone. Beaches here are turquoise-blue
with white powdery sand that stays cool
underfoot, are shallow
for some distance out, and have little or no
surf, making them great for swimming,
snorkeling and other water sports.
These beaches are protected by Isla Mujeres
so they are less susceptible to erosion after
storms, but they also get more seaweed
washed ashore, which the
hotels usually clean up
regularly. |
| To the right of the "7"
(beaches running north and
south) is the
open Caribbean sea. The beaches here have
beautiful turquoise waters, white sand that
stays cool underfoot,
and also have surf. Since the beach
restoration in 2006 the sand
on these beaches is not as
powdery soft as the sand at
the top of the seven. These beaches are more
susceptible to erosion due to the fact that
they face the open sea. Be especially careful on
these beaches,
where the undertow can be quite dangerous at
times. Pay attention to the flags on
the beach and use caution
when swimming if they are
red or yellow. Don't risk
swimming if they are black. |
