News: The First
Sand Has Been Pumped Onto
Cancun's Beaches
2
November 2009
As of last
Sunday, November 1, Cancun has
received the first 16 thousand
cubic meters of sand in the
beach reconstruction project.
The first sand
began being pumped onto the
playa in front of the Royal
Sunset hotel at kilometer 10.2
of Cancun's hotel zone.
They will move north from there,
toward Punta Cancun.
There is a
possible stumbling block along
the way which may cause delays.
There is a dispute over the use
of an underwater sand bank near
Cozumel. Currently, they are
dredging sand from an underwater
sand bank near Isla Mujeres,
which contains approximately 1.5
million cubic meters. A little
over 5 million cubic meters is
needed to complete the project.
The courts are yet to decide if
they will be allowed to dredge
the sand bank off of Cozumel for
the remainder of the sand to
complete the project.
Keep checking
back for updated beach photos as
the project continues! |

News: Cancun
Beach Recovery is Underway
21 October 2009
Cancun's
long-awaited beach
restoration
project is
nearly underway.
After
prior numerous
delays, it was
announced today
that the
official start
of the beach
restoration
project has been
moved to next
Tuesday, October
27 due to some
legal issues
related to the
project.
However, work
continues in
preparation for
the beach
recovery
project. On
Monday work
began on the connection and
installation of geotubes
(to help prevent
future erosion).
They are
awaiting the
arrival of the
dredger, which
is expected to
arrive in the
area this
weekend.
Mexico has invested 957
million pesos (70.3 million US
dollars) to recover a total of
16.8 miles of beaches in Cancun,
Cozumel and Playa del Carmen.
To implement the project, the
authorities selected two
underwater sand banks known as
"La Ollita" y "Banco Norte",
which will be dredged and the
sand which is collected will be
deposited on beaches set for
restoration.
The beaches to be restored in
Cancun run from Punta Cancun
(near Dreams) to Punta Nizuc
(near Club Med), a total of
approximately 11 kilometers. The
project also includes beach
recovery in areas of the
Playacar area of Playa Del
Carmen and some beaches on the
island of Cozumel. The project
is expected to restore 5.2
million cubic meters of sand in
a period of 70 to 80 days, to be
completed in January 2010. |
