constantly changing: daily with the
tides, seasonally with
meteorological changes such as

long-term with changes such as a
rise in sea level.

News: Beach
Recovery Plan
Awaits Federal
Approval
6
July 2008
 |
|
The beach
recovery
committee (Comité
de Recuperación
de Playas) is
awaiting federal
approval of a $100
million USD,
10-year beach
recovery plan,
covering the
beaches in
Cancun, Playa
del Carmen, and
Cozumel. The
federal
government would
provide the
first $25
million USD,
with the state
and local
municipalities
also providing
funds. The
proposal is
awaiting
approval at the
federal level.
|
|
Work on the
recovery of the
beaches may
start as early
as October 2008
and will require
three months to
reduce the
damage done so
far in Cozumel,
Playa del Carmen
and Cancun, said
Ivan Hernandez,
commissioner of
the beach
recovery
committee,
adding that the
specific actions
will depend on
the beaches of
each
municipality, in
addition to
climatic
conditions. |

Establishment of
a Trust for
Beach
Restoration
May 2008 |
|
The local
Tourism
Commission has
plans to
establish a
trust for
ongoing beach
maintenance and
restoration in
the entire state
of Quintana Roo
(which includes
Cancun and the
Riviera Maya
coast).
Special
resources will
be allocated by
the Legislature
beginning in
2009.
Funding will
come from
employers, state
and municipal
government, and
NGOs. The
trust will be
intended for
long-term
projects and is
separate from
the 6-month plan
for immediate
beach
restoration
efforts.
The committee
overseeing the
trust will be
responsible not
only for
maintaining the
beaches, but
also
coordination
with government,
businesses and
other sectors.

Real Resorts Beach
Restoration Update
May 2008 |
REAL
RESORTS, which operates
five all-inclusive
resorts in Cancun and
Playa del Carmen,
launched a beach
restoration project
designed to reclaim
beachfront lost to
recent storms and
hurricanes. The first
step of the beach
restoration was
completed on May 14 at
the
Gran Caribe Real
resort in Cancun and
involved the creation of
a breakwater reef system
to protect the beach
from erosion. The
initiative is part of a
larger beach restoration
program funded through a
state, federal and local
partnership. Real
Resorts owns and
operates resorts in
Mexico under the Royal,
Gran and Real brands. |

be adding beach photos from Puerto Juarez, Playa
Mujeres and Puerto Cancun and may eventually
add beach photos from Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos,
Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya.
We currently have some
Isla Mujeres
photos up on our
Miscellaneous
Beach Photos page. |
